You’re here because you’re looking for the best, most romantic or fun-filled accommodation in Pilanesberg.

I’m about to help you out with that, but first… it probably goes without saying, but Pilanesberg is a mountain and like most of you reading this, I never thought of it in a literal way. Silly me.

FUN FACT: Pilanesberg used to be called Pilandsberg. And the name “Pilanes” stems from an old, very old, Tswana chief named Pilane.

Anyway, I’m digressing here.

Pilanesberg is situated about 100km North-West of Pretoria and interestingly enough, for the most part, is an enclosed and protected area called Pilanesberg Game Reserve. Oh and the river flowing just south of the berg is called the Elands River.

More fun facts right there, yes please!

But you’re not here for a history lesson. We went to school for that stuff.

So let me share with you our personal top 6 choices for Pilanesberg accommodation.

Numero uno…

Shepherd’s Tree Game Lodge

Boasting a Google rating of 4,8/5 and 9,5/10 on Booking.com, it’s rated in the top 3 accommodation in Pilanesberg. With its slogan of “A New Dawn, A New Wonder, A new Adventure” this place is pretty special.

Shepherd’s Tree Game Lodge forms part of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve (remember what I said above?), is just 18km from Sun City and around a 2 and a half-hour drive from Johannesburg.

What’s awesome about this place is that it’s Malaria free, includes a spa centre (always a winner) and offers some amazing Big 5 game drives in open game views vehicles.

I don’t know about you, but I need WiFi when I travel and I am happy to report, YES… WiFi is available! Whoop Whoop!

Ivory Tree Game Lodge

This 5 star also forms part of the Pilanesberg National Park, but what’s special about it is that it’s set within an ancient volcano.

This beautiful Pilanesberg lodge has a variety of room options from Family, Standard, Luxury, Executive Suite and something called the Pilane Villa.

Our choice would almost always be the Executive Suite with its own plunge pool, private patio and so on, but then again, we realise that not everyone rolls in money (not that we do either, by the way).

Of course, they also cater to the adventurous kind with activities like quad biking, archery, airguns, and more.

Amenities include:

  • Free parking
  • Public wifi
  • Pool
  • Free breakfast
  • Conference facilities
  • Meeting rooms
  • Spa
  • Secured parking
  • Bar / lounge
  • Restaurant
  • Special diet menus
  • Poolside bar
  • Fax / photocopying

Onto number three…

Tented Adventures Pilanesberg

Don’t think we forgot about those that love to camp. Even if this is more glamping (glamour camping), than “throw that old two-man tent in the boot and off to the dam we go” kind of camping.

This Pilanesberg accommodation is made up of eight safari tents. Each of the tents come equipped with comfortable beds, hotel-grade linen, electricity, camp chairs, large windows with mosquito nets and carpeted flooring.

Told you it’s fancy camping this.

You get fans in summer and heated blankets in winter, which brings a smile to my face.

It being tented accommodation, you’re not going to find the loo in the tent, but rest assured that if you suddenly develop a serious case of what I can only describe as being Delhi belly, the communal bathrooms are just a short walk (or run) from the campsite.

Tents are also serviced daily and each tent has a small deck overlooking the communal fire pit. Lovely for braaiing marshmallows and chilling with your fellow “glampers”.

Some activities in and around the camp include spa treatments, guided walks, visits to the local cultural museums, hot air balloon rides and historical sites, as well as the famous Sun City.

Amenities include:

  • Free parking
  • Pool
  • Free breakfast
  • Hiking
  • Mini golf
  • Massage
  • Gift shop
  • Secured parking
  • Restaurant
  • Mosquito nets
  • Non-smoking hotel
  • Shared bathroom
  • Shared lounge / TV area
  • Shops
  • Private check-in / check-out

Number four

Tshukudu Bush Lodge

This one’s a doozy. Gorgeous. Incredible. Special.

I just have to quote their site because it’s so true… “Tshukudu is one of those rare game lodges where perfection is a reality.”

There are just so many awesome things about this place that I’ll start sounding like a superlative dictionary. Tshukudu offers you 6 luxury chalets and 4 luxury suites.

The best way to describe the experience is by using the words romantic and intimate.

Your accommodation here will leave you speechless while you relax in your open plan lounge and watch the game wander lazily through the bush, towards the watering hole situated below the lodge.

This stunning lodge offers all the usual things you’d expect from high-end holiday accommodation in Pilanesberg with things like WiFi, a swimming pool, bush walks and game drives to name but a few.

I’ll stop now otherwise I’m just going to come across as being biased (yes I am).

Amenities include:

  • Free public parking nearby
  • Pool
  • Pool / beach towels
  • Free breakfast
  • Hiking
  • Massage
  • 24-hour security
  • Baggage storage
  • Restaurant
  • Non-smoking hotel
  • Sun terrace
  • Express check-in / check-out

Man alive, Five…

Black Rhino Game Lodge

Black Rhino Game Lodge is the ideal accommodation for families. And if you happen to have an Italian sized familia, they got you covered with 23 spacious luxury suites.

Pilanesberg has become famous as one of South Africa’s most appealing big five eco-tourism destinations and make no mistake, choosing Black Rhino, won’t be a mistake.

They sport all the usual amenities which I won’t bore you with, however, what I do want to bore you with is just how awesome their accommodation is.

Each suite has an open-plan bathroom with an outdoor shower, but best of all (for me though) is the fact that they had the presence of mind to have a closed toilet in the open-plan bathroom.

For that alone, I give this place 11 / 10.

Remember the whole family thing I mentioned? Well… children aged 0 – 5 years stay for free and gratis when sharing with parents. Bonus if you ask me.

This place is special. Just trust me on this.

Amenities include:

  • Free parking
  • Free internet
  • Pool
  • Bar / lounge
  • Non-smoking hotel
  • Laundry service
  • Restaurant
  • Breakfast buffet

Half a dozen, Six…

Lush Private Lodge

One word… Lush. The name kinda gave it away there, I know.

Geez, just when you think you’ve seen all the awesome places, another absolute gem pops up.

My goodness, this accommodation is magical. Rooms are a mix of nature and industrial, with raw concrete walls, tiles that imitate wood and modern furniture. Heck, they even have Smeg appliances in the room.

How awesome is that?

Lush Private Lodge is owned and managed by the Lupini family. Italians are known for their style and trust me when I say, it shows here.

Your accommodation will blow you away with their Emperor-sized beds (I’m not even making that up), pause area, walk-in rain showers with botanical-infused body products, private open-air showers, terry cotton and full-length bathrobes, private splash pool and deck to name but a few.

Designed with every comfort in mind, your accommodation is not simply a base from which to explore the surrounds, but a living space.

Again, this place is incredible and is our #1 pick (even though it’s listed last).

Amenities include:

  • Free parking
  • Free High Speed Internet (WiFi)
  • Pool
  • Free breakfast
  • Airport transportation
  • Business Centre with Internet Access
  • Laundry service
  • Bar / lounge
  • Restaurant
  • Shuttle bus service
  • Boma
  • Viewing/dining deck
  • Air-conditioning
